In a word - wonderful. It was a busy restaurant but we got seated fast. Local beer that was great & cheap but the food was out of this world. My dish won the family competition - triple tail crusted in pecans and baked. My first time to have triple tail (it's a fish) and it was perfect. We spoke with the owner and it's just great to find a place where the owner is there, cares and is very pleasant to speak with - we'll be back for sure!

This is our FAVORITE place to eat in Port St Joe!! We stumbled upon this place a few years ago. We spent too long on the beach and everywhere was closed for the night. Sunset Coastal Grill was the only place still open and serving. Our favorite thing to eat here is the Ahi Tuna. It is rolled in sesame seeds and seared on both sides. We get ours EXTRA rare, melts in your mouth! The sauce they give you with it is great as well. I also like their house salad, but ask for the crystal hot sauce dressing, GOOD STUFF! I'm looking forward to eating there here soon, I want to try their Triple Tail, heard its good as well. Try them out, you will love it!

My first visit to Port St. Joe. Friends introduced us to this place. Really good food with an awesome view. I'm sure the Sunsets are spectacular! The soft shell crab po-boy looked amazing...crispy and crammed slam full to overflowing with crab. Blackened Cod was really good and the "Busted Burger" was worth every dime.

I came for lunch today with my husband, three year old daughter, and in laws. The service was the best service I've ever had- even at 5 star restaurants. Our waitress really took care of our daughter which allowed all of us to enjoy our lunch!! The prices are really good and the food was good as well. We got Cubans, shrimp po boys, lobster bisque, and crab cakes. It's perfect place for lunch. We would definitely come again!

Excellent service with friendly people. The wife had wedge salad and this delicious creamy spinach, blue cheese and shrimp soup. I had the soft shell crab BLT with this homemade sauce as a condiment and it was delicious.

Everything we ordered was superb. The lobster pasta, fresh fish served in different ways were all good. The waitresses were very good and respectful. The crab claws were exquisite. We came twice during our vacation in August 2015.

We came in late (9:30pm), so it took our waitress a little while to get around to us...however, she was very polite and apologized for our wait. We received a basket of bread and butter. Shortly after our order, we received our salads with buttermilk ranch. My entrée was a dozen fried local oysters, which were honestly the best I've ever had, served with a delicious dipping sauce and steak fries. This restaurant was a good one. We will definitely be back..next time, during sunset.

This place has amazing Lobster Ravioli and a Gouda scrapple and shrimp pasta! Wanted to lick the bowls it was so good! Nice and casual even though several entree prices are in the $20 range! Amazing view of the sunset from the east end of the restaurant.... I would have given it a five star but service on the second day at lunch was scattered! The waitress , not sure if she was new or not, did not know anything about the menu..was absent except to take our order, deliver food , re deliver items we asked for when we ordered ( tarter sauce for fried shrimp) and bring the bill! We had to have the bus boy and another waitress refill our drinks..... Again good was amazing but lunch server not so amazing! Definitely recommend this place if you are ok with having hit or miss service!

I would not recommend this place to eat unless you only want apps! Our meal took 30 min after we ate the apps and then our salad. Two of the 4 surf and turf meals were over cooked. We sent those back and then they came back medium rare but looked like they were cooked from frozen. We just took it all back to our condo which we ended up throwing out. With drink, app and dinner each meal was about $65.00 give or take a few cents. Being on vacation we didn't want to complain but, the server should have brought over the manager. By the way how do you eat lobster tail though be it small without drawn butter! Forget it if you like sour cream on your potato. Needless to say we were all very disappointed!

My family always eats here when we're on vacation at Cape San Blas (about half an hour from Port St. Joe). The food here is excellent- especially at dinner. Keep in mind if you go that the lunch and dinner menus have quite different selections. My favorite dishes that I've gotten here are the garlicky scallops appetizer and a creamy pasta dish with scallops and shrimp in it (I can't remember what it's called) (also, both of those are dinner menu options). My whole family also really likes all the salad dishes they have here. The view across St. Joseph Bay is breathtaking, especially at sunset, and the waiters and waitresses we've had here are always very courteous.

We were heading along "the forgotten coast", wanting one last seafood dinner before heading back to land-locked Atlanta, and wandered into the Sunset Coastal Grill. The building and location are lovely. As mentioned previously, there is no patio dining, which is a shame considering the location. But don't let that stop you. The service was friendly and the menu had many options. SCG has a full bar and a nice selection of beer and wine. We started with the coconut shrimp. They were quite large and tasty, but needed a bit more spice. The dipping sauce was way too sweet, so we added some hot sauce and fixed that problem. I ordered the scallops special- large bay scallops with a smoked Gouda cream sauce. At the time, it was an interesting taste but looking back at it, I'm not sure it worked. My man had the "This and That"- the fried scallops and shrimp were the best on the platter. Salad was simple and tasty with dried cranberries. Port St. Joe seems to be strangely shy of good dining. While SCG wasn't the best meal I've ever had, it may well be the best in the area. It was a nice place though and I wish them luck! Yelp note: This restaurant did not show up on my Yelp Mobile.

Had moderately high hopes for this very nice looking restaurant. Appearance is definitely not everything. Our server Vicki, was friendly and efficient, but the food was mediocre at best. Had steamed blue crab claws for an appetizer which were a. Not seasoned, and b. fishy tasting. Put a bad taste in our mouth... Literally. I ordered a wedge salad with a grilled piece of mahi mahi, and my husband ordered a small portion of blackened chicken penne pasta with a light olive oil sauce and sun dried tomatoes. My mahi was fresh tasting, thankfully, but the wedge was lackluster. Mealy tomato wedges with a lot of bacon does not make a wedge salad great. However, that did make me VERY glad I did not order the caprese with mealy tomatoes. My husband's pasta was definitely the best thing we got, seasoned well, perfectly sized small portion. I give it a 3 for the pasta and the mahi, but a 2 for salad and crab claws. If I could do 2.5 stars I would have. Will not be back.

Wow! We were blown away by the Sunset Coastal Grill! Highly recommend that you make a point to eat here during your vacation. We mostly chose to eat there based on Yelp recommendations. As we were walking in the door, the older couple coming out post-dinner said, "Enjoy it! We've never had anything here that wasn't terrific. You'll love it!" They were definitely right!! We had the coastal fish dip for an appetizer. It was truly delicious. We had the Bourbon St pasta and the shrimp and grits. They were both absolutely divine. The snow peas with the shrimp and grits were great...lightly cooked and well seasoned. The house salad was quite good...try the Crystal vinaigrette. We were so stuffed that we didn't get a chance to try the mouthwatering desserts. Maybe next time! Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable, and actually had an opinion and recommendations about the menu. They kept our tea glasses full and were happy to accommodate our small special requests. We loved the option for "appetizer" portions of the pasta dishes. The smaller size turned out to be the perfect amount of food for a meal, especially since we did have an actual appetizer to start. All in all, it was a truly exceptional dining experience. We will definitely be back although I don't know if I'll ever be able to order anything else, the shrimp and grits were so good!

The whole family enjoyed our first dinner out at Sunset Coastal Grill while vacationing in the area. Good selection of seafood, good prices on drinks. The view is nice, overlooking the bay in Port St. Joe, although I wish there had been patio seating (everything was indoors). My mom and I split the "This and That" special which was your typical fried seafood platter. The fried bay scallops were really good, as well as the fried oysters. The rest of the table got either grilled or fried grouper, which they all thoroughly enjoyed. Our waitress took good care of us and talked to us for a bit but didn't hover. Prices were affordable compared to Destin or Panama City restaurants, but this is considered one of the slightly more expensive places in the area of Port St. Joe.

Pretty good food, nothing spectacular. Our waiter was inexperienced as well. This was our second trip. Several pieces of lettuce in my salad were wilted or rusted.

Sunset Coastal Grill, despite some comments, is not "a bit off the main road," or difficult to find. It is, in fact, right on Hwy. 98, with a sign fronting the road. Our server was attentive, informative and polite. I had the Sunset - Grouper, grilled, with wild rice and snow peas. Since the grouper was sold out, I chose to substitute with Basa, which, in the end, was a much better choice. Light and flaky inside, slightly crunchy out - very good. The wild rice was god, and the snow peas could have done with a tad less garlic. My dessert was a Sunset Coastal Grill Coffee, absolutely one of the best after-dinner coffees I have ever had! Worthwhile is to dine here at sunset. The scenery overlooking St. Joe Bay harbor area is very picturesque.

We had a big group of 10 and our service was excellent! The food was delicious and the waitress even recommended a favorite of her own which was a huge hit at our big table. Great place!

Rather disappointing dinner. I ordered the Lobster and Shrimp Salad based on the picture shown in a review on Yelp. Looked NOTHING like the photo! Two tiny shrimp and a dried out lobster tail with LOTS of blue cheese. Our waiter seemed to be going through the motions. He didn't even list the Crystal dressing as one of the options to those ordering salads, and I thought it was one of their specialties. (It was very good, btw). Others at the table were pleased with the sweet potato side dish, and the grouper special that night was said to be excellent.

The food was good but I think it is way overpriced for what you get. I did like the laid back atmosphere and the view was gorgeous.

After a day trip to Weha, we were passing through Port St. Joe on our way back to Apalachicola. We spotted the Sunset Coastal Grill and stopped for a late lunch. I had a soft-shell crab sandwich and my wife had gumbo and salad. I really liked the crab sandwich and the gumbo was very good. Not quite New Orleans style but was full of seafood. There is a really good view of the bay from most tables at the Sunset Coastal Grill. Would have liked to give this review a 5-star but the service was just not top notch. All in all, would like to eat here again. [Visited May 2014]

Best service I had anywhere in the area. The Tuna was nicely seared and the salad tasted fresh - such a nice change from so much fried food in all the other spots!

Excellent Gulf Coast Seafood and our waiter was very nice. The place I will return to next time I am in Port St. Joe.

Have to give them 5 stars for their carry out lunch. We ordered the two fisted fish sandwich - aptly named. Our sides were snap peas. We are traveling with our puppy. So the outside picnic tables were perfect. Add excellent service and this is a top value find for us.

I was a little underwhelmed with the Sunset Coastal Grill. Nothing is particularly bad, but pretty much everything was done better elsewhere: service, price, portions, taste. The grouper portion my wife had was quite small, more like a lunch portion. The snap peas served with the meals were very over cooked. For the money I expected a bit more.

Our nine member family ate there on June 24, 2015, and everything was outstanding. From service to menu all was excellent. Even though one of our party was a vegetarian, there were choices for dinner. Will certainly recommend to our friends!

  • Monica S.

Worst service of my life and the food is overpriced. Not to mention our waitress looked disheveled and the food was shit. The SCG shrimp plate for $24.00 had 8 shrimp that were frozen then thawed out and grilled absolutely disgusting. Our bill was $269 for a party of 6-- we won't return and advise others not to. .

While vacationing in Cape San Blas we decided to try this place out. Had lunch there one day and the food was really good, priced right and service was ok. Decided to go back at night to see The sunset. The waitress told us to make reservations so we can get a good table so we did but was disappointed when we got there the table did not have any view of the sunset at all. I can't complain about the food the portions were great little pricey but the service was just okay at best.

Not crowded but definitely filled with polite and smiling employees! Awesome view on the water but closed in, so we didn't freeze. Meals came with salad made with delicious homemade dressings, a starch, and vegetables. I had the crab cakes and sweet potato soufflé and both were amazing! Pricey but it's Florida seafood, and being from Louisiana I wasn't shocked. Really nice staff, great meal with great timing. Will be back for sure!

We had a group of 12. We tried several different items and almost all of us were very dissapointed. The fish is bland and covered with some sort of goo. The shrimp and grits was covered with a bright goo to add flavor? maybe but it was nasty. It really is not that hard to prepare good seafood. Either step up or change name to Dennys!

As a local of Port St. Joe, there really aren't many places to eat and after a while, things get stale. By that necessity alone, we eat here often. A few things: The service stinks, especially during lunch. I have a limited eating window Mon-Fri for my lunch hour and I can expect to EASILY use it all up here. No, it's not just waiting on the food; It's waiting on refills, it's waiting on the check to be brought and lord help you if you have to pay with a card. It is like this EVERY SINGLE TIME. They seem to employ only two waitresses for the lunch rush and bless their hearts, they are running the entire time. You'd think after the complaints about this, they would wise up and hire more for that shift. They haven't and don't appear to be about to do so. When the cook himself has to bring my food to me because the waitress has disappeared, this should send up red flags to someone. And drink your drink slowly. You won't get a refill unless you get up and get it yourself. The food is pretty good. Sometimes. Sometimes, after waiting absurdly long to even place your order, the food comes out..... wanting. I have ordered hamburgers several times. I order them medium rare. They have come out raw. Most business don't argue with the customer, but in light of their crappy service, this place seems to think that's okay. Yes, I know medium rare is supposed to be pink with a warm red center. That my dear friends is a far far cry from RAW and ice cold. It's like that line in The Cowboy Way. "Oh, just knock its horns off, wipe its nasty ass, and chunk it right here on this plate." Just a warning that to them, medium rare equals raw and cold on the inside. Which brings me back to the service....... Your food comes out raw and when you politely mention this to your server, instead of "oh, I'm sorry about that," you get a five minute discussion on what constitutes raw vs. medium rare. Then you get your plate rudely snatched from in front of you and said server walking off in a huff before you even get a chance to say, "Don't bother recooking it, I don't have time to wait." When your husband has to not only get up and refill the drinks himself, but chase the server down to relay that we don't want another burger, then well, you've picked a crap place to eat. I would love to say that this was a one time experience. No, it's like this, minus the raw hamburger, every single time. Never getting refills and having a waitress with an attitude problem. Finally, prices. Okay, lunch isn't bad. Still higher than I normally like to pay, but on par with everything else in St. Joe. Dinner? The businesses here seem to forget that there are locals that live here year round that can't exactly always afford the tourist prices. And I feel absolutely sorry for our summer and winter visitors. Every place in town jacks prices up sky high starting in May. Honestly, Apalachicola has better, and cheaper, seafood. It's only about a 30 min drive from St. Joe. Same goes for Panama City. I do not understand why people bother eating in St. Joe at all after 5. Unless you go to Pepper's, expect to spend at least $20 a person. The food is good, but it's not that good. If you pay over $20 for fried shrimp, then well, you are crazy. Only the super rich locals even bother eating at night here. Even with money, I don't understand the need to just throw it away on mediocre food. In conclusion; I'd go somewhere else. If you are visiting, Sister's on Reid Ave does a pretty decent seafood and steak menu Thur. Fri, and Sat night. Pepper's is great most of the time, although their service can be spotty as well. It's also Mexican only. Ronnie B's is good but over priced. If you really want a good Gulf seafood experience I would recommend checking out Apalachicola or the Fish House at Mexico Beach.

One of the best restaurants in the area. Quaint old home atmosphere on the water with spectacular views. The food was good overall- all hits but the special of the day which was mahi mahi with some type of roasted tomato sauce on top. Flavor was great but the fish was extremely dry and overdone. The seafood gumbo was one of the best I've had outside of New Orleans- and I've had a lot. Heat was just right for those that like some kick, tons of crab and crawfish and seasoned perfectly. Start with the fried crab claws with both a remoulade sauce, and a sweet cocktail sauce- fabulous! The side of fried grits with remoulade was also tasty. And the snap peas to die for- overall a wonderful meal, even with the dry mahi, would definitely give it another try but stick the menu staples and not the specials.

Pricey, slow, mediocre food. The waiter was very pleasant. Again the place is not bad....but its not good enough for the price.

    (3)
  • LeeAnn E.

The seafood was good but not great--everything, including the sides, was on the bland side--and it is also way overpriced compared to other (better) places in the area. The view was definitely pretty, but you have to enjoy it from inside the sunroom area because there's no outdoor seating. The salad I picked up a few days later was good and more reasonably priced than the seafood, but still nothing to write home about. If you're in a pinch, this place will do. But if you want excellent seafood and better views, just drive the extra fifteen minutes to Toucan's in Mexico Beach.

  • Ty H.

The food wasn't bad but we thought it was overpriced for the quality. Our waitress was helpful but not very friendly. It was one of the nicest (more upscale) places we ate while visiting just not worth the price. Better for a date night with the better half than a place to go with the kids

  • Tim F.

The food here is decent and the view is nice. Not really much else to say. However, my tip would be not to order the pasta dishes, and stick to the grilled, sandwich and salad items. I ordered a blackened chicken with angel hair pasta special and it was like ordering a Jekyll and Hyde meal. Blackened grilled chicken was delicious, but the pasta was so overcooked, it was glue like. When I came back a second time I had the Oriental Salad and on the third a Mushroom Burger, both of which were good, but not OMG.

I was attracted by the reviews about their fried oysters -- I love oysters, but not raw, and I wanted some variety from the steamed and baked offerings at the raw bars. Bottom line: Fried oysters were awesome! Paraphrasing another reviewer: The fried oysters were obviously prepared by someone who knows what they are doing: The coating is thin and crispy, not greasy, and the oysters are tender and hot to the center. I second that assessment. Other things we had: Fried "bay" scallops, grilled shrimp. Both were great. We had wanted larger not-fried scallops, but they had only the smaller ones available which can only be fried. Turns out though that they had a really wonderful sweet-not-fishy flavor. Overall: Solid seafood offerings, great service (family friendly including drink spilling clean up). Awesome fried oysters. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because the prices are steep and the non-oyster offerings were very good but not awesome. Would definitely go again.

  • Sylvia D.

Lovely view, personable server -- but honestly, I've had seafood just as good at Captain D's. Shrimp and wahoo were rubbery and dry. The salad and rolls both tasted like they came out of a bag at the grocery store. On the plus side, my baked potato was delicious (or maybe i was just hungry). Sunset Grill is overpriced and underwhelming.

Its between a 2 and a 3 for me. Its hardly "fine dining" - at the risk of sounding like a total B***H if you rated this place a 4 or 5 Im guessing you dont get out much. The atmosphere was mediocre - the food was mediocre and the service was extremely slow out of the kitchen and while the server was very nice - he was somewhat unattentive. I thought we perhaps just got them on a bad night but reading other reviews its the norm.

We decided as a group of eight to eat here. The reviews were good. The children who were checking people in and seating guests and groups had no clue what they were doing. After we waited an hour, which was expected with a group if our size, we were told that they had made a mistake and it would take two more hours. Huge mistake. I will NEVER come back! I tried to not leave a star, but it wouldn't let me.

Walked up to the host stand, with a half full parking lot and the same for the tables inside. The host looked at us and informed us it would take two hours to get us in. I've stepped into busier places and got sat faster. I felt she said that because she knew we weren't going to wait 2 hours.

We went there for lunch shortly after they opened. The service was good. We got lobster bisque soup of the day....it was watery with little to no lobster in it. We ordered the crab cakes and the fried oyster lunch plates. For the price, the portions were relatively small but tasted good. The oysters were very tiny. The crab cakes were very good. The have a shady parking lot which was great for our dogs which were with us.

Most dishes are using in-house gourmet recipes. The Slamming Shrimp app was wonderful. The House Salad was great with a topping added. The small was aplenty. The gouda shrimp-scallop over pasta was good too. Beautiful sunset view.

What a great ambiance! We came here for my boyfriends, mother's birthday and I am ready to go back! We called ahead to make a reservation and were lucky enough to be able to sit on the porch right next to the window and watch the sunset. Everything that we had was delicious. There were 6 of us at the table and I think that we ordered 5 different things, including two appetizers. For starters we had the garlic scallops and the fried oysters--and they were both great! I wanted to drink the dipping sauce that came with the oysters; and that says a lot come from a person that hates bleu cheese. As for the main course, I ordered the seared tuna. My boyfriend ordered the Sunset special, which was fried grouper with jumbo lump crab on top. The other dishes at the table were the crab cakes, red snapper and mahi mahi. I sampled everything and could honestly say that I would be happy with any of those choices. None of us had room for dessert, but I did get a glimpse of the dessert tray as it was leaving the table behind us and it looks delicious as well (I'll have to save some room next time). The only thing neutral comment that I have is that the service was a little forgettable, nothing outstanding but definitely not bad.

This place has it all - ambiance, great food, great service, We had a fantastic meal - wahoo/shrimp in a creole sauce, grouper with a Dijon sauce. The sides of sweet potato souffle and the snap peas were wonderful. The balsamic vinaigrette dressing was out of this world. Our server, Meredith, was beyond excellent. This was clearly a highlight meal for our beach trip. I wish they were closer so we could eat here more often.

This was a great find for lunch. Sat on the veranda and had absolutely the best shrimp/lobster salad. The service was good and the atmosphere with a view of the Bay absolute romance!

Lunch prices are reasonable and the grilled shrimp were excellent! Cole slaw, fries and hush puppies were also tasty. Our server Anna was friendly, informative and attentive. Restaurant was spotless and we had a window seat looking out to the bay.

The only thing that I can think they can improve on is to maybe turn the air up higher, it was a little warm in there! We had all appetizers! The Tuna Tataki, Slammin shrimp,Garlicky scallops, oysters and the crab and artichoke dip. To drink : The Presidente Margarita and Gold Margarita. both of which were super yummy! The friendly hostesses accommodated us right when we walked in and we were seated immediately in the dining area with a view! Our waitress Tiffany was very sincere and kind, she answered all of our questions and was super friendly! I love having a knowledgeable server and she was on top of her game with keeping the drinks coming and providing great service! The apps were great especially the Tuna and Shrimp! I would recommend this place to anyone!

Proudly wearing my old Sunset Coastal Grill t-shirt from old vacation past, my husband and I decided this would be a great place to go for lunch since we didn't eat there last year. I missed the ole Bang Bang shrimp and sad to see it wasn't listed for lunch. I thought about getting the lobster and shrimp salad but instead ordered from 'What Dewey eats' special. I chose the gumbo with crispy lettuce wedge salad and requested the $5 shrimp topping. I also chose the cheesy grits cake as side. The gumbo was very spicy but plenty of sausage and shrimp and crawfish??? and chicken so I could not eat it all. Dug into the salad and boy the shrimp and grits alone were very very good!!! Too bad there were only four pieces of grilled shrimp...one more would have been perfect and another grits cake would have made the meal by itself!!! This gives a different spin on shrimp and grits which I made up together. I would love to see that on the menu if they decide to do so. I love the wedge salad but couldn't finish it off as it was a huge boat size lettuce. I enjoyed it all with the view of the marsh/ bay/ lagoon/ Gulf Of Mexico. I will visit again when I return!!!

Definitely a beach version of fine dining. The food was edible, but not up to par with what they were selling. The server was really nice and very attentive. She certainly saved this review from a 1. Long story short: you cannot sell a Fine Dining place with staff in random Tshirts and yoga pants. If it was REALLY GOOD 5 star food, you could get away with being too casual (at the beach,) but there was nothing was delicate about the food. Therefore no delicacies to be found. Ahi was seared too hard and came out sweaty, Mahi Mahi was just covered in an almond butter that sounded inspired on paper, but was poorly executed. We went hoping for the freshest seafood, by the sea. Ended up with a "fine dining" experience that really relied on the view of the sea, not food or ambience.

We stumbled onto this place on our way to Destin. It was amazing. Shrimp and grits were delicious. The atmosphere and location were perfect. If I am ever in the area again, I will definately stop here again. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Seafood is supposed to be pricey, so let's get past that point. But it also should wow you, especially when you are looking at the water it is pulled from. We really liked our entree's, but as I sit here months later, I can't even remember what it was. Not the impression a nice restaurant should leave. I 'will' say that my wife was happy she finally got a grouper without bones. Score one there. Service was fair if not fantastic. The view was very good, just wish it were on the water like their competition. If I eat here again, I'll consider raising it by a star.

Used them for catering at our wedding reception. Good work, not fantastic, but good. Would use them again as the cost was reasonable and the portions were ample. Everything was hot and ready to go when we were. No complaints and would use again for catering service.

Not much in Port St Joe. This is a bay front place, feels very 50's simple decor nothing fancy, but we were greeted pleasantly and warmly from the doorway and service continued to be attentive, punctual and pleasant. The oyster martini not so great, tasteless, oysters just sitting in a glass of water...why not serve them on the shell? Seared tuna was OK, a little over done but tasty anyhow. Pablos shrimp salad was very nice. Martinis were super sweet. Go here, but do not have a high expectation and you will have a reasonable dinner.

Wonderful veranda overlooking the water, and was very busy for a Friday lunch. Smothered fish blackened was very flavorful with a side salad to make me feel like I was sting healthy. Daily special with shrimp, rice, and green beans had the right amount spice. The dessert finale was the best and a good way to extend your relaxing visit watching the birds out on the gulf!

We were so disappointed in our experience at SCG. Let me say that the service was outstanding and we did have a great view of the sunset, but the food was disappointing. We ordered a shrimp appetizer that was good but tasted as if it were fancied-up frozen from a bag. I ordered the fresh grilled grouper with grilled artichoke hearts and roasted potatoes. My fish was tasty, but didn't knock my socks off. Mister ordered "a little of this and that" plate which consisted of fried shrimp, oysters, scallops and a crab cake. The scallops tasted as if they had been frozen, maybe even with freezer burn and had a funky breading on them. Neither one of us could figure out what the taste was, but that it wasn't good. The crab cake was mostly cake, very little crab. We both opted for dessert of Key Lime Pie, which seemed more pudding. We don't understand how a restaurant that has access to so much fantastic FRESH seafood would rely on frozen breaded shellfish. I don't think I'd recommend this restaurant with all the other choices in the area.

(Originally written for Google Reviews) I always read the other reviews before putting in my two cents. I am always somewhat amazed by the omniscience that some people appear to have about restaurants, assuming, of course, that if they have one bad experience or one bad selection, everything else falls into the same sweeping category. My family and I have been to the Sunset Grill four or five times in our occasional vacations to St. George Island, and we have had absolutely outstanding meals every time--thus we have no evidence to post one sweeping anathema. The "Forgotten Coast" of the Florida panhandle is in need of tourists, and tourists are in need of good restaurants. Among St. George Island, Apalachicola, Port St. Joe, and Mexico Beach, there are not a lot of choices. Fortunately, there are several good restaurants. I would place the Sunset Coastal Grill in the top three. I will now posit three substantive reasons: nice décor (with a awesome view), great drinks, and very, very good food. What else is needed?

We stumbled upon this place and it was a GREAT find. Lovely to look over the water at sunset. Geat martini, excellent seafood, the server was fantastic, not intrusive, but always available. Everything was more than expected.

Although the menu is kind of heavy on fried stuff, my dish was very well seasoned and tasty. Got the fried oysters with hush puppies, steak fries, and cole slaw. The lightly battered fried oysters were very tastily seasoned, as were the hush puppies and steak fries. I liked the cole slaw because I could taste the cabbage, it was not drowned in mayo and sugar.. If you can , sit out on the indoor patio, the view of the bay is beautiful.. the restaurant is right on the water.. The restaurant is very nice and clean. Service was outstandingly good!!! I went here for lunch with a large (12 people) party from work as a treat for Administrative Professional's Day for the Admin Professional in our office.. We called in our order in advance.. The food was ready and brought to the table at precisely the requested time. Everything about the order was perfect.. Our server seemed extremely organized and efficient , as did all the staff we dealt with here. Although the food is really nothing too special, it is pretty good, the servings are large, and the service and atmosphere are so fantastic I strongly recommend this to anyone who is in or passing through the Port St Joe area..

I had the Thanksgiving buffet last year and it is a lovely location. The servers were very friendly, and the view was beautiful. I'm reading all these other very positive reviews and it makes me feel guilty to type that the food simply was not good at all. The fish was dry and over cooked with a waxy sauce. The vegetables were luke warm. The salad dressings were obviously from a bottle. I could taste the preservatives. The croutons were not even homemade. The gumbo was very bland and obviously made with an under cooked roux. The turkey was dry and the turkey gravy had a flour taste to it. Honestly, I could go on and on but there was nothing on that buffet that was right. I have a teenage son who will eat anything. I call him my little garbage disposal. Even he would not eat the food from this buffet. We went back to Indian Pass and I grilled some Thanksgiving hamburgers Perhaps food ordered directly from the kitchen at this restaurant is wonderful, and they just don't execute a buffet very well. I would tell someone HELL no if they asked me if they should visit this restaurant for a buffet meal.

We ate a dinner here and, a couple of days later, a lunch. This place stays open an hour after the rest of the town shuts down. Kudos for that. Shrimp, oysters and fish--all fresh, all very, very good. Loved their fried oysters and their Key West shrimp. The oysters bore the mark of being cooked by someone who knows what s\he was doing. Nice breading; not schlocked up with too much oil. Hot to the very center, but still tender, juicy and sweet with an undertone of briny. Magnificent snap peas; nice and fresh and peppery. Real wild rice. Mango pie with key lime crust=great balance of sweet and tart. Light, not over-sweetened. Good, very friendly service. Great views of St. Joseph Bay. I'll be back, even though I live hundreds of miles to the north.

This restaurant was recommended to me by the hotel clerk during my first visit to Port St. Joe, FL. I was looking for some great local seafood and this definitely was! It is located on the water and offers a great view of the water and sunset. They have a few different beers and wines to choose from. I had the tuna tataki appetizer and "a little of this, a little of that" which is a fried seafood platter (shrimp, oysters, scallops, fish and crab). I would definitely recommend this!
